Ultrasound (USG) is a method of internal organs imaging using high-frequency sounds (the so-called ultrasounds). During the examination no ionizing radiation harmful to human tissues (e.g. X-ray) is used. By receiving images in real time it is possible not only to evaluate the structure of organs, but also their function and movement. Doppler ultrasound is a special technique that allows assessment of blood flow in the vessels. It is performed using the same head as a conventional ultrasound. More on the offer of Doppler ultrasound can be found under „DOPPLER ULTRASOUND EXAMINATIONS”. The ultrasound examination is, in most cases, completely painless.

Basic principles concerning the preparation for the ultrasound examination

– The patient should not eat for at least 6-8 hours before the examination (in the morning the patient should report in the fasting state!)
– on the day of the examination, it is allowed to drink still water in moderation (unless otherwise required for the examination)
– one day before the test, the patient should not eat heavy and bloating meals
– two days before the examination it is recommended to take a drug called Espumisan or  Esputicon 3 times daily 2 tablets after meals (this minimizes the risk of bloating)
– the patients with a very difficult intestinal passage (difficulty in defecation) are recommended prior bowel cleansing (with a laxative agent)

Ultrasonography of the urinary tract, prostate (transabdominal method), reproductive organs, will be possible to complete only when the urinary bladder is full. Two hours before the examination the patient should consume a total of 1-1,5 litres of fluid and until testing refrain from urinating.
